What Does It Mean To Be Saved

God Eternal Purpose in the New Covenant - Part 6
Dr. Allen M. Barber

Galatians 3:15-18 NKJV

15 Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man's covenant , yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it. 16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. 18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Why is the New Covenant a better covenant than the Old Mosaic Covenant of the Law, which God Himself found fault with? On the night the Lord Jesus was betrayed and when He ate the Passover Meal with the disciples, He told them the bread and the cup were symbols of the New Covenant He was instituting by His death on the cross. It was to be based upon His shed blood. Therefore, the Lord supplanted the Passover with the communion meal. While it is good to study the meaning of the Passover as it is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, as Christians we are not to observe the Jewish Passover. I mention this because some Christians caught up in so-called Messianic Torah worship are trying to go back and resurrect the Feast Days of Israel into Christian worship. While the Feasts days are important to understanding Bible prophecy, the Church is not to observe them. We have a much better covenant. Unfortunately a large number of Christians don't know why!

Why is the New Covenant a better covenant? Because it is founded upon better promises (Heb. 8:6):

Hebrew 8:6 NKJV

6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

In addition, unlike the Old Covenant, the New Covenant is not written on tables of stone but in hearts that are flesh (in the spirits of new born Christians):

Hebrews 8:10-11 NKJV

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

"After those days" is a reference to the tribulation period and notice the surviving Israelites are not the people of God until they come into the New Covenant. It also does not mean they are the sole people of God. They are the people of God along with all the other saved Jews and Gentiles. The passage is a quote from Jeremiah 31, which speaks of the New Covenant. The New Covenant is seen in embryo form in the Old Testament. Therefore, so is the Church. The purpose of the book of Hebrews is to show the superiority of Jesus Christ and the New Covenant over Judaism and the Old Covenant. Judaism is the product of the Pharisees, not God, which the modern Rabbinate perpetuate. Christians need to understand this.

By virtue of the better and stronger New Covenant, God is able to work His will in man due to the presence of the Holy Spirit. We tend to forget the Holy Spirit is God - as much so as the Father and the Son. All three are God in their nature. The point of contact all Christians have with God is the Holy Spirit. We are a privileged people to have the blessed Holy Spirit residing in our vessels of flesh. This is the promise God gave to the Church via Abraham - the spiritual blessing (it is fortunate the prosperity crowd misinterprets the following passage giving it a material blessing rather than spiritual):

Galatians 3:13-14 NKJV

13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The blessing of Abraham to which Paul refers is that through Abraham's seed (singular) which is Christ Jesus, both Jews and Gentiles can now receive the Holy Spirit by faith. Therefore, it is a spiritual blessing.

It is really amazing that anyone in the Old Testament days could live obedient lives unto the Lord as they had to contend 24/7 with their old sin nature void of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Christians living in the New Covenant have a greater responsibility to obey God than did our Old Testament brothers and sisters for they did not have the Holy Spirit as a permanent residence. This is one reason only the overcomers in the present age of the Church are going to rule and reign with Christ in His coming kingdom. Many believers will be cast into the outer darkness with the hypocrites and have to wait until the thousand years are over to receive their glorified bodies. This is not taught in traditional denominational churches yet it is true and I can prove it, but that will have to be a separate article.

While the common people of biblical Israel were subject to the traditions of the Pharisees and Scribes, today's Christians are subject to the traditions of the theologians, which in many cases are not the correct interpretation. This is why the Church must rediscover (for most it has never been understood) the spiritual law of personalized revelation (see my series on the Church and Faith in the Sunday Message Section). The saints need to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit in their spirits and minds and not just the external teachings of the theologians. We have the anointing within us that we do not have to depend solely upon the teachings of men for the Holy Spirit will teach us the truths of God's Word if we are teachable, and that is the key:

1 John 2:27 NKJV

27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

Now, do not misunderstand this text; it is not saying there are not teachers in the Church for that is the correct meaning of Ephesians 4:11(the Greek says pastor-teacher; the pastors are to be first and foremost teachers of the Word of God not entertainers or motivational speakers). What it means is that we do not have to rely solely on what others tell us the Word of God says. The Holy Spirit who lives in us will bear witness in our reborn spirit whether what we hear is the truth or a lie. A word of caution here; if a believer is living a carnal life, he or she may not recognize the truth even when the Holy Spirit conveys it to them for Satan is the great "Word stealer" - he will take the word out of the heart before it has take to lodge in the spirit and mind:

Mark 4:13-15 NKJV

13 And He said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.

Only by the New Covenant do we have the life and power to do the good works which we desire to do that God may be pleased with us as His people. Paul explains this in Romans 7 and shows why he could not keep the law or do the good that he wanted to do in that he was weak because of sinful flesh. As Christians have only one source to overcome our weak flesh, the indwelling Holy Spirit. It is a command of the Scriptures that we be filled with the Holy Spirit:

Eph 5:17-18 NKJV

17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,

The phrase to be filled with the Spirit is in the aorist tense in Greek and in the imperative mood, which is a command. It is actually written as, "Be continually being filled with the Holy Spirit." It is not optional, but the command of the Lord. How many professing believers actually live the Spirit filled life?  When we stand before the Lord at the Bema Judgment to be examined for everything we did as believers, the primary thing we will have to give an account for is did we allow the Holy Spirit to fill us - to control and guide us to obey the will of God.

This is why the New Covenant is a much better covenant for we have direct access to God via the eternal Spirit as well as the ability to walk in the Spirit's power in overcoming the temptation to sin and to succumb to Satan's attacks. The Scripture says, "Greater is He, the Holy Spirit in us than he (Satan) who is in the world." (I John 4:4).

We are sanctified by the blood of the New Covenant, which is a better and eternal covenant. The Old Covenant was not eternal, but only temporary as the blood of animals could not sanctify anyone:

Hebrews 10:29 NKJV

29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

Hebrews 7:22 NKJV

22 by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.

Heb 13:20-21 NASB

20 Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, 21 equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Notice in this last verse, Jesus is the eternal covenant!

It is my prayer this brief series (I had no idea this would develop into a mini-series, but it seems to be the will of the Holy Spirit) will equip you to better understand this marvelous New Covenant in the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
