Does God Use Weather As An Instrument of Judgment?
June 2011

During my 40 years plus of Christian ministry both as a pastor and independent teacher, the majority of believers do not believe God sends judgment upon people or nations since He is a loving God. They only see one aspect of God's nature - the God of love and never judgment. Non-believers mock the thought of there being a God and usually blame Him for all the bad in the world. Isn't that interesting? On the one hand, they don't believe He exists and on the other hand, they blame him for the evil done to the innocent.  You can't have it both ways, either there is a God who is both loving and judgmental or there is no supreme being and man is left to his own will and devices. The very thought of that is extremely naive given the fact there is much in life that is out of our control such as life and death. The human race cannot give life to itself even though it has invented many ways to alter the life in the womb and certainly cannot prevent death, which is the one point I always stress when debating atheists. Only the God of the Bible is the creator of Life and only He has determined that all mankind must die once and face the judgment.

Now what about vicious tornadoes and hurricanes, can they be the tool of a God who judges individuals and nations for wickedness?  The Bible is clear on this issue and the answer is a resounding Yes!

First, is the United States of America a righteous or wicked nation?  Anyone one with a clear mind and some knowledge of the Word of God knows that the United States is anything but a righteous nation.  We lead the world in porn production - Yes, lead the world with our filth. One of the major criticism of Islam against America is our penchant for nudity, porn, and homosexuality and it is criticism well deserved even though I strongly oppose Islam. We love sex, nudity and foul language. The movies at the theaters, on TV and the internet are filled with nudity, sex and four letter words, particularly the "F" word.  We recently were given a free trial subscription by our ISP provider for certain movie channels. Ninety percent of the movies are filled with total nude scenes and sex acts that leave little for the imagination. In addition, the "F" word and "G-D" inundate the actors language, all which is unnecessary even to portray earthy scenes.  Obviously, we canceled the subscription.

Homosexuality has been let loose on our society by left-leaning politicians and corrupt judges.  I wrote an article back in 2003 on how the U.S. Supreme Court fulfilled Luke 17:28 when they overturned the Texas Sodomy Law. The very next day, gays and lesbians celebrated in the streets around the globe proving the United States is recognized as the leading nation of the world. God also takes notice of how nation's affect the morality of other nations and holds that nation accountable, that is, He sends judgment usually in stages, mild at first to encourage repentance, then more severe if His judgment is unheeded, and last severe judgment.  The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 2:4 that the goodness (patience) of God is intended to lead men to repentance, but when that patience is ignored for long periods of time, God acts in severe judgment.

Isaiah 26:9 says that when God's judgments are in the world, its inhabitants learn righteousness, meaning they seek it after judgment has stripped away all their security blankets. Modern day America (never understood why the United States is called America while there is both a Northern and Southern hemisphere called "America." The U.S. is just one nation within the two American hemispheres), has many security blankets such as financial wealth, high standards of living, relative peace and security from foreign and domestic enemies due to our super-power status (that is changing) and liberties and freedoms unparalleled in world history (that is also changing).

In addition, we are so gospel hardened, meaning that as a nation, we have begun to turn away from the truth of the gospel that Jesus alone saves as well as the truths of Sola Scriptura.  Christianity is under attack like never before since the nation was founded in 1776 by both atheists and false religions that have taken root in our society. Last, sin is an unknown vice in the United States, that is, an alarming number of the population do not believe they are born sinners or for that matter that they even sin. Instead, sin has become just a mistake and not part of human nature. I once preached to a prison pod that housed 50 inmates and when I spoke about our common inherent sin nature, many laughed and mocked such an idea.  After I finished speaking, I asked one of the astute individuals if he thought he committed acts of sin and he said no. Then I asked him how and why he became a prison inmate. When he told me his crime, I asked him if he considered that a bad or good deed and he hesitated before responding and said it was bad.  Then I read him the truth from Romans 3:10 and  23 and 5:12- "There is none righteous, no not a one;  for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; Wherefore as by one man, Adam, sin entered into the world, and death came by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned."  After reading that he was more subdued, so I ended by telling him that it did not matter whether he thought he was a sinner or not in spite of all the inner and outer evidence, for God has declared that he like all men are sinners by birth and choice. However, there was a remedy - repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. There were some who believed that day and were saved.

Now back to whether God uses weather to judge nations; consider the following passages:

Job 37: 9-16 NLT

9 The stormy wind comes from its chamber,
and the driving winds bring the cold.
10 God's breath sends the ice,
freezing wide expanses of water.
11 He loads the clouds with moisture,
and they flash with his lightning.
12 The clouds churn about at his direction.
They do whatever he commands throughout the earth.
13 He makes these things happen either to punish people
or to show his unfailing love.
14 "Pay attention to this, Job.
Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God!
15 Do you know how God controls the storm
and causes the lightning to flash from his clouds?
16 Do you understand how he moves the clouds
with wonderful perfection and skill?
17 When you are sweltering in your clothes
and the south wind dies down and everything is still,
18 he makes the skies reflect the heat like a bronze mirror.
Can you do that?

The Hebrew word for "stormy wind" is cawphah and means a hurricane.

Amos 3:6-7 NLT

6 When the ram's horn blows a warning,
shouldn't the people be alarmed?
Does disaster come to a city
unless the Lord has planned it?

7 Indeed, the Sovereign Lord never does anything
until he reveals his plans to his servants the prophets.

Amos 3:10-11 NLT

10 "My people have forgotten how to do right,"
says the Lord.
"Their fortresses are filled with wealth
taken by theft and violence.
11 Therefore," says the Sovereign Lord,
"an enemy is coming!
He will surround them and shatter their defenses.
Then he will plunder all their fortresses."

Notice that the prophet Amos in speaking to the nation of Israel says that God destroys cities of wicked nations which God addresses by saying, "Israel had forgotten how to do right." I say those same words God is speaking to America today - We have forgotten how to do right and we no longer blush at public nudity and sex. Instead we tolerate and condone it. Therefore, God is sending harsh weather conditions of every kind upon our once blessed nation.

Amos 4:6-12 NLT

6 "I brought hunger to every city and famine to every town. But still you would not return to me,"says the Lord.
7 "I kept the rain from falling when your crops needed it the most. I sent rain on one town but withheld it from another. Rain fell on one field, while another field withered away. 8 People staggered from town to town looking for water, but there was never enough. But still you would not return to me,"says the Lord.
9 "I struck your farms and vineyards with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured all your fig and olive trees. But still you would not return to me,"says the Lord.
10 "I sent plagues on you like the plagues I sent on Egypt long ago. I killed your young men in war and led all your horses away. The stench of death filled the air! But still you would not return to me,"says the Lord.
11 "I destroyed some of your cities, as I destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Those of you who survived were like charred sticks pulled from a fire. But still you would not return to me,"says the Lord.
12 "Therefore, I will bring upon you all the disasters I have announced. Prepare to meet your God in judgment, you people of Israel!"

It is clear in this passage that the purpose of divine judgment is to bring repentance to nations and people. When God sent the prophet Jonah to preach repentance to Nineveh, he did not tell Jonah to placate Nineveh's sins, but that if they did not repent, God would destroy the nation. They repented and God delayed his judgment. However, about forty years later, He destroyed the city for they went back to loving their sin.

I have been preaching, reading and writing for about 16 years that unless the United States repented, God was going to send severe judgment. Notice in Amos 3:11 above that God says an enemy will plunder all of Israel's fortresses. In March 1994, God gave  me a word from Jeremiah 46:20 and Hosea 10:10-15 that unless the United States repented that He was going to send enemies to plunder our fortresses, namely, our financial, military, and breadbasket.  The financial judgment began on September 11, 2001 and continues unabated despite pockets of prosperity. The damage done to the Pentagon on 9-11 was a warning to the military brass that if they didn't get their house in order, the mighty U.S. military would sustain a major defeat (that is still unfilled, but is coming). The Pentagon has moved aggressively to condemn Christianity among the ranks while placating Islam.

Since 1994, the U.S. has lost millions of acres of forest to massive fires; widespread floods, droughts and vicious storms have taken a toll on our ability to produce enough food to feed our nation. A recent bulletin by the U.S. Agriculture Dept. admitted we now import much of our food supply. We used to feed the world. Stupid EPA regulations that prohibit farmers from having enough water for their crops or idling millions of acres of productive farm land is as much a part of judgment as the extreme weather. In several passages of Scripture, God says He will send confusion to nations that turn their back on him. The present Congress and administration are the most confused mixed-up bunch of people I have ever seen in my lifetime. The right hand doesn't know what the left-hand is doing and President Obama and his Democratic friends don't have a clue of how to successfully manage our economy and create "real jobs."

Consider Psalms 9:16 and 17: KJV

16 The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

The Hebrew meaning of "that forget God" is to pay Him no mind or ignore Him as being irrelevant.  This is indicative of many in our nation and particularly among the leadership in government, business and religion.

The United States began a course of turning away from God and His Word in the 1960's and the evil fruit of it is in full bloom.

Hosea 10:13  "...You (Ephraim or the northern kingdom of Israel) have eaten the fruit of lies because you trusted in your own way and in the multitude of your mighty men."  The U.S. is eating the fruit of its lies calling evil good and good evil and by trusting in its super-power status rather than in the Lord of Host.

Are hurricane's like Katrina the judgment of God?  Katrina was definitely the judgment of God and almost wiped out New Orleans. The  9th Ward has not  been re-built or restored. Moreover, some cities and towns on the Gulf Coast were completely destroyed.

What about the recent earthquake that rattled Washington, D.C.? Was that a warning from God of coming disaster in the nations capitol?  We shall have to wait and see. I know this, that God is not happy, but angry with all the sin and wickedness He sees coming from our government.  Do you know that the Freemason designers of Washington, D.C. laid out the streets to make a perfect Pentagon - the symbol of Satanic evil and a curse. The Masonic Temple is located exactly 13 blocks from the Capitol buildings (the number 13 is a high number in occult numerology).

Well, there is much more I could write about the judgment of God upon wicked nations, but this will suffice for now.

May God bless you and give you wisdom and understanding in the last days (Daniel  12:10).
