What Does It Mean To Be Saved

Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery
Dr. Allen M. Barber

Proverbs 5:1-23 (NKJV)

1  My son, pay attention to my wisdom; Lend your ear to my understanding,
2  That you may preserve discretion, And your lips may keep knowledge.
3  For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, And her mouth is smoother than oil;
4  But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword.
5  Her feet go down to death, Her steps lay hold of hell.
6  Lest you ponder her path of life-- Her ways are unstable; You do not know them.
7  Therefore hear me now, my children, And do not depart from the words of my mouth.
8  Remove your way far from her, And do not go near the door of her house,
9  Lest you give your honor to others, And your years to the cruel one;
10  Lest aliens be filled with your wealth, And your labors go to the house of a foreigner;
11  And you mourn at last, When your flesh and your body are consumed,
12  And say: "How I have hated instruction, And my heart despised correction!
13  I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, Nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me!
14  I was on the verge of total ruin, In the midst of the assembly and congregation."
15  Drink water from your own cistern, And running water from your own well.
16  Should your fountains be dispersed abroad, Streams of water in the streets?
17  Let them be only your own, And not for strangers with you.
18  Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of your youth.
19  As a loving deer and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; And always be enraptured with her love.
20  For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman, And be embraced in the arms of a seductress?
21  For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, And He ponders all his paths.
22  His own iniquities entrap the wicked man, And he is caught in the cords of his sin.
23  He shall die for lack of instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

In today's sex crazed world, we no longer honor the 7th Commandment - Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery for it is rampant the world over and especially in the United States where everything is somehow tied to sex, even among Christians adultery is an epidemic. The fifth Proverb is entirely a warning against committing the sin of adultery. It is deadly and has eternal consequences for no adulterer will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus added a further dimension to adultery, that is, if a man or a women look upon someone with sexual lust in the heart they have committed adultery even before the physical act. That should tell us that we are held accountable for our thoughts as well as our actions.  I have a book in my library entitled, What is On Your Mind, in which the author deals with the sins of the mind - that we can control our thoughts if we are Christians.

Perhaps I need to define adultery for its seems few know what it is.  When a married man or woman defraud their spouse by having a sexual affair with another person married or unmarried, that is adultery for it destroys the union of husband and wife. The Bible defines fornication as sex between two unmarried people. However fornicators will not enter the Kingdom of God either. Both adulterers and fornicators will end up in the Lake of Fire. Does this mean that if someone commits adultery but later repents and does not repeat the sin they will also go to hell? No, if someone like King David repents of sexual sin and does not repeat the act, they will not go to hell, that is, if repentance leads to salvation in Jesus.

One of the reasons God judged both Israel and Judah was for violating the 7th commandment - the prohibition against adultery. Christian husbands and wives if they deeply love the Lord and their spouses they will not commit adultery nor divorce their spouses.  In my book on Divorce and Remarriage, I prove form the Scriptures that adultery occurs the moment a divorce is enacted unless it is allowed by the Word of God such as being unfaithful to a wife or husband.

What does God the Holy Spirit  tell us in this 5th Proverb - rejoice in the wife of your youth and always be enraptured with her love. The same goes for the wife, she is to stay in love with her husband. Today in America, we have an alarming amount of husbands divorcing their wives for younger women and vice-versa. This ought not to be. Marriage is for life and this is one reason America is declining - the breakup of the home.

We should heed the warning of adultery with the fear of God:

Revelation 21:8 (NKJV)

8  But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

The problem is there is no fear of God in America!
