A Word For Today - What Is Spiritual Flesh?
Dr. Allen M. Barber

I Corinthians 15:38-40, 42, 44-45

38 But God gives it a body as He has chosen and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another kind for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind and the glory of the earthly is of another...42 So it is with the resurrection of the dead...44 it is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body...45 Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a living being, the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

In this passage, commonly referred to as the resurrection chapter, Paul contrast the diverse kinds of fleshly bodies to include the homo species kingdom (mankind), the animal kingdom and the vegetable kingdom. He also mentions the heavenly (spiritual) kingdom vs. the earthly natural kingdom. The Greek word for flesh is "soma" meaning that which pertains to all earthly beings as their covering within their speciies fitted for the earthly environment. The human body houses mankind's inanimate soul and spirit, but is distinct and different from the soma - physical body.

God first made a natural body for Adam and Eve, then breathed His breath or Spirit into them causing them to come alive as living human beings. God's uncreated Spirit touching spiritual flesh (no sin nature) created the human soul (personality) able to think, socialize and make decisions necessary to live within the earth's enviroment. He also created or gave Adam and Eve a human spirit, not the same as the Holy Spirit and not the same as the reborn spirit. The human spirit innocent and without sin was the medium by which the first humans could fellowship and worship God.  Before the fall into sin, Adam and Eve were a perfect harmony of spirit, soul and body.  Their human spirit was in ascendency and controlled their souls and body.  There was an aura or anointed covering over their bodies and was the reason they had no concept of nakedness. This does not mean they didn't have any sense of touch or feeling to include sexual desire because God told them to multiply and cover the earth with their offspring. They had no knowledge of evil even though Satan had already fallen by the time Adam was created. Evil was not in their thinking.

We don't know how long Adam and Eve lived before the fall. We do know that mankind's days began to be numbered immediately after the fall for Genesis 5 says Adam lived 130 years and bore a son in his likeness and named him Seth. Included in that 130 years was the birth of Cain and Able and Cain taking the life of his brother. It did not take long after sin entered the human race before men began to kill each other and it has not stopped but gotten much worse.

So what is the meaning of spiritual flesh? As pertaining to the heavenly, the angels have bodies -  they are not apparitions. They are suited for the heavenly beyond the earth realm.  As pertaining to the spiritual kingdom which God is, all who enter it and remain in it must have spiritual flesh.  Spiritual flesh simply means the absence of sin, evil and wickedness. Adam and Eve had spiritual flesh that allowed them to function in earth's perfect environment before the fall. However, they did not yet have God's uncreated spiritual life for they had not passed the test of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, which was necessary to gain access to the Tree of Life. When Adam fell into sin he lost his spiritual flesh (covering and anointing) causing his human spirit to be dominated by his soul and body. In God's eyes man was a "lost soul". That is why the Bible refers to man as a soul never a spirit. Man's ability to worship God was severely impaired. His mind, will and emotions substituted the worship of God for religious forms. Mankind without God is a warped entity and tries to create his own gods to worship. Even atheists worship their atheism. It is their god.

When Jesus sowed his natural sinless body upon the cross to the cause of death for mankind's sin, He rose from the dead unto eternal life, that is, His resurrected glorified body became spiritual flesh to live throughout eternity. His human body was not spiritual flesh fit for eternity until He gloriifed it by rasing it from the dead. That is why He is referred to as the first born from among the dead - the first human to be born unto eternal spiritual life.  Those who today have been born again by spiritual birth unto Christ Jesus do not yet have spiritual flesh whether living or dead for they have not been raised or raptured in the glorification at the First Resurrection. They still possess the sin nature. The sin nature will not be removed from the saved until the First Resurrection and Rapture at the Post Trib Second Coming. Even the most Spirit-filled saint today still does not yet have spiritual flesh - a body without a sin nature. This is what Paul told Titus was the blessed hope for the saints - the appearing of the Lord when the redeemed are raised in glorification.  Only then will the saints be like the Lord in spirit, soul and body.

You have to be born-again to be a candidate for spiritual flesh, but we also have to wait the resurrection. This coming weekend when most religions will celebrate a pagan Easter, the true Church celebrates the Lord's fulfilling of Passover, Unleavened Bread and First Fruits for we no longer worship types and shadows, but the real thing - the substance, even our Lord Jesus Christ. He is alive forevermore and is coming again soon to give His people new bodies and a new kind of life never before experienced.

Maranatha - Even so come Lord Jesus!
